Definition: Cloud PIM

What is cloud PIM?

A cloud PIM is a product information management (PIM) system that is hosted in the cloud and accessible via the internet.

While companies can opt for an on-premise PIM solution, a cloud-native PIM solution or hosting the PIM system in a cloud computing infrastructure offers more flexibility in the how teams access and collaborate on the stored data. They can easily update important product data from anywhere on the internet and share product information in real time across different locations. As the data is stored in the cloud, IT costs and requirements are reduced compared to an on-site server solution.

Companies also benefit from the scalability of cloud-based systems, as the infrastructure and resource capacity can be automatically adapted to the data volume and users without companies having to buy and maintain their own hardware. This elastic scaling model reduces the initial investment in infrastructure and future-proofs the system as the cloud provider regularly updates the hardware and software to ensure that the PIM solution can respond to new business requirements over time.

Some cloud PIM solutions leverage a MACH (microservices, API-first, cloud-native, headless) architecture. This not only provides the benefits of cloud-native solutions like scalability and flexibility, but also allows companies to realize advantages from the other aspects of MACH, such as improved modularity, easier integration, simplified development processes, and a more responsive digital experience across channels.
