Definition: Request for Information

What is a request for information?

A Request for Information (RFI) is a formal document or process that companies use to gather details from potential vendors. It acts as a preliminary step before deeper engagement, like a Request for Proposal (RFP). Companies issue RFIs to better understand the capabilities, products, and services of various vendors and to better evaluate options.

Think of an RFI as a Q&A session between the company and potential vendors. It typically includes a series of questions that cover both broad topics, such as the vendor’s business experience, and more specific queries about their products or services. Companies might also request additional materials, like references, certifications, or case studies, to gain a more complete picture of the vendor’s offerings.
